How She Leads Page 24 with Tina Mistry Transcript:
I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to have people who encouraged me to pursue what interested me rather than telling me what I couldn’t do. Some of those mentors were women. Some were men. What mattered most was that they saw
potential, offered encouragement and gave me room to grow. That experience has shaped how I think about leadership today. At Portfolio Advisors, our mission is Enriching Lives Through Transformative Action. To me, that means looking for opportunities to make a meaningful difference—not only for the families we serve, but for the people coming up behind us. The firm’s existing materials reinforce that mission alongside its work serving families and individuals through comprehensive financial planning. There are still relatively few women in financial planning, and I would love to see that change. Women can bring qualities particularly valuable to this profession: empathy, problem-solving, attention to detail and a genuine willingness to serve. But ultimately, I want to encourage talented young people of all genders to consider this career. That is especially exciting because I see younger generations entering the profession with a strong sense of purpose. They want their work to matter. And financial planning offers exactly that opportunity. Financial planning isn’t just about money. It’s about people. It’s about building long term relationships and being willing to serve someone through the many chapters of life—the celebrations as well as the difficult moments. My personal “why” is to support people in their best and worst moments, so that everyone has someone looking out for their best interests. I know from my own life how powerful support can be. When I felt supported, I thrived. When I didn’t, I still found my way forward—but it often took longer and was more difficult. That perspective challenges me as a leader: How can I help make someone else’s path a little easier? Whether that means mentoring a young advisor, encouraging someone to pursue an opportunity they aren’t sure they’re ready for, or helping a family navigate an important life decision, leadership is an opportunity to help others move forward. Sometimes the most transformative action is simply being the person who says, “I believe you can.”
